If you’ve been following along, this month on The Stress Less Show, we’ve been exploring our basic needs, using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs as our guide. We started by addressing our physiological needs. Then, onto our safety needs. Then, came our love and belonging needs…
So, what’s next? Well, I’m glad you asked! The answer is self-esteem.
We often hear this phrase get thrown around a lot. Self-esteem. But what is it really? What does it mean to build self-esteem? Or have a sense of self-respect? When it comes to the needs we’ve talked about in earlier posts, we usually have a pretty good idea of what meeting these needs looks like.
But self-esteem is not quite as simple as drinking a glass of water. Though, trust me, I know drinking that glass of water ain’t always so simple either!
Things like self-esteem, respect, freedom are complicated, messy, abstract concepts, and if you struggle with the idea of building a greater sense of self-esteem, I want you to know that you are not the only one.
Meeting your self-esteem needs is tough. But the first step is awareness. Check-in with yourself. How are you feeling? And I mean, how are you REALLY feeling?
There’s a reason why so many of the people and programs we turn to improve our confidence and self-esteem - therapists, life coaches, 12 step programs, you name it - all tend to start with awareness. We can’t change or improve something we refuse to acknowledge.
Acknowledge where you are in life. No need to do anything about it, just recognize it. Start there.
My guest on the show this week, Ally Rose, does a really great job at breaking this step further. If you need more guidance, tune in above to listen to us discuss where to go next in your inquiry.
Then, dig in and get curious. Don’t underestimate the power of awareness, you’d be surprised where it can take you.
