On the go? Listen to The Stress Less Show as a Podcast!
Relationships huh? I always say that they are the biggest spiritual teachers. And I truly believe that.
People are around us all the time (even with social distancing!). Online, offline, at the store, in our homes. Whether we want to be or not, we’re existing in relation to others. Unless we’re living off the grid in the middle of nowhere… and quite frankly, that might not sound so bad this week!
For most of us, it is a universal truth that we need relationships. But more than that, we need relationships we feel safe in. Healthy relationships. Relationships built on solid ground. That’s not always easy to build. Let alone maintain.
One of the things that I found has been really powerful in both my personal life and my business is this thing called The Gottman Method. And if you haven’t heard of it, well, you are in for a treat! John Gottman is basically the Brene Brown of successful marriages.
You know how Brene Brown has made a name for herself researching vulnerability and empathy? Well, John Gottman has done the research and created an evidence-based approach on how to have healthy happy relationships that last for the long haul.
Based on certain criteria, Gottman can actually predict if a couple is gonna get divorced or break up in 90 seconds. 90 SECONDS! With a 90 something percent accuracy rate at that, WILD!
Now I wish I had time to go all into the details of the Gottman method, there’s more to it than meets the eye, but if you are curious, I encourage you to check out this website and just poke around a little bit. Do a little bit of reading, feel out what resonates for you.
If you’d like an easier option, my guest this week on The Stress Less Show, Laura Brown, is actually certified in The Gottman Method and she gives you a little glimpse into what implementing it can look like. This can be the first step towards a greater sense of love and belonging in our lives. I think we could all use a little more of that right now.
It never ceases to amaze me how impactful just tuning into the simple basic needs we often overlook can be. So, let’s take a breath and continue the work we’ve been doing on our basic needs. They never go out of style.
