Okay.. I'm doing it...
I'm jumping on the Will Smith slapping bandwagon.
I know, I know...I, myself, am already sick of seeing headlines and reading articles about it AND there is a perspective that I haven't seen yet that I think absolutely NEEDS to be shared.
Ready?
People don't just slap other people because they get the urge to slap them.
People slap other people because whatever triggered them was the straw that broke the camel's back.
Doing the work that I do at the intersection of loss and stress, outcomes like this unfortunately aren't all too rare.
Here's the deal...
Will Smith (and obviously Jada Smith) have experienced a devastating loss with the diagnosis of her medical condition.
The loss of life as it was supposed to be, the loss of the myth many of us believe that 'it'll never happen to us', the loss of privacy, and more.
Losses like this are not only traumatic, but they can actually change the way our physical bodies respond to day-to-day stress.
Once we experience trauma our nervous system actually recalibrates to more easily be triggered by day-to-day stress.
Let me say that again...
Once we experience trauma our nervous system actually recalibrates to more easily be triggered by day-to-day stress.
Add to that the stresses of day-to-day life in a highly visible (and therefore vulnerable) career...
Add to that not having the proper tools in your toolbelt to release stress from the mind and body...
And you have the potential for a man who just can't take it anymore.
The Chris Rock joke was the straw that broke the camel's back for Will Smith.
Now I'm not excusing Will Smith's behavior, but I am saying that what you saw live at the Oscars was a normal response (though definitely not optimal) to experiencing devastating loss and day-to-day stress compacted over time.
What's even more unfortunate is that as a result of his actions, Will Smith is now experiencing even more devastating loss and stress than ever before...
...All because he didn't have the right tools in his toolbelt.
This is why the work that I do with business owners and leaders is so important.
There truly is another way...
