How to Prepare for Emergency Expenses

On the go? Listen to The Stress Less Show as a Podcast!

Money can be one of the biggest stressors in a relationship, and emergency expenses can often be fuel to that fire. While we can never predict when or how an emergency will hit us, that doesn’t mean we have to let it completely overwhelm us and break our finances. This week, I brought on The Stress Less Show a very special guest, Allstate Insurance Agency Owner (and my partner!), Justin Angle, to discuss how we can prepare for those emergency expenses we don’t see coming.

Starting out as a real estate agent, Justin was selling insurance at the same time until one day he realized he wanted to make the switch away to insurance full time. Now the proud owner of the Allstate Angle Agency in Fishtown, he is helping others in his community achieve peace of mind and saving money on the insurance products they need.

“It's been a great decision. I've been able to help a whole lot of people, especially everybody in the neighborhood”

Now, Justin is sitting down with me to share how insurance can help us reduce the financial stress of emergency situations in ways that we may not expect.

Few things in life have caused more stress than money. Especially in our relationships with family and significant others, money can be a difficult thing to deal with, but when we are building a life with someone or sharing a household, finances are an unavoidable part of our conversations - a fact that Justin and I are no stranger to.

“We talk about money all the time when it comes to can we afford to go on this vacation or a can we do this?”

Having any kind of conversation around money can strain any relationship and unforeseen emergency expenses can trigger even more stress on top of it. However, Justin suggests there are ways insurance can prevent a devastating emergency from adding financial stress to an already stressful situation.

“We think about insurance in terms of like our car… But there are a bunch of different places that insurance can help in our lives and kind of provide peace of mind and help in unforeseen emergencies.”

While we hear a lot about car and home insurance, there are also other insurance products available that we can use to keep emergency situations from completely wiping out our bank accounts. Pet insurance, for example, can help reduce the impact of costly vet emergencies.

Pet insurance recently saved Justin and me from paying thousands of dollars when our dog was suffering from pneumonia. We didn’t have to worry about the money, and we could focus on what was best for our pup. By paying $40 a month, we gave ourselves the peace of mind we needed and when an emergency did arise, we knew we had help.

Justin highlights that the peace of mind we can receive from having a plan and insurance in place for those unpredictable emergencies can go a long way in reducing the financial stress in a relationship.

“When money is the main driver in the household and the main thing that can cause problems in the household, anything you can do to mitigate that circumstance and mitigate that situation [is good].”
