What is your relationship with money? When we're talking about Maslow's hierarchy of needs, safety is a big concern and in the world that we live in today, money is a big deal. Whether we want it to be or not, it really plays into whether we feel secure, safe, sound or not. And because of this, I brought on an incredible guest, Rose Brown. Now, Rose is the founder and CEO of several companies, including the accountant therapist and Brown fullfillment consulting and accounting firm. Her core belief is that without awareness, there can be no transformation, therefore, using financial literacy as a tool to educate and power and empower individuals and businesses across the nation. Rose. I am so, so excited to have you on the show. Welcome.

[00:00:55.260] - Rose

Thank you so much for having me, Carlee. And hello to your audience. I'm so excited to be here and share that bit of information that I have. So for me, I was born and raised in Jamaica. Yes, the island, Jamaica, by a single parent who really she only knew how to be an entrepreneur, because when you're raised in a certain place in Jamaica, that's all you know. And even though she was an entrepreneur, she never understood how to maintain or effectively manage your business. And when I say maintain I'm talking about financial aspects as well. So in in connection with that, I also grew up observing so many different individuals around me just, you know, prioritizing their wants versus their needs. And as we talk about needs, they're so incredibly important to know that a lot of us and, you know, it gets the best of us. We prioritize our wants. I rather have this versus my need. I'll sacrifice something of a need to obtain my want. So from realizing all of that, I grew up with, you know, kind of basically creating my own blueprint of how I want to structure myself around money, because essentially we want money to serve us, not us serving money. So based on that, when I interact with a client, whether that's an individual or business, it's a matter of, well, what are your spending habits? How do you move about when it comes down to money? So with that, I do have three tips that I would like to flaunt in there and share with the audience. The first is, you know, we all know that money is a constant source of pain and hurt for many people. And in order for us to kind of avoid or overcome mishaps like that, we have to essentially build a healthy relationship with money. And really, that starts with identifying your habits, your spending habits, your saving habits. How do you budget yourself? So there's a couple of different things that go with that. And then my tip number two would be to develop a financial system and actually stick to it. I mean, it doesn't matter how much you have, how much you make. Creating a structure really goes a long way and with structure comes accountability. And for us, it's not easy to hold ourselves accountable. So for that, I would say put together a discipline and consistency. When you mesh discipline and consistency together, it increases your ability to really hold yourself accountable. And this also helps create a sense of personal security. And when we talk about that aspect of things, you want to ensure that which each purchase you are linking a purpose to it. So it's a matter of, well, why am I making this purchase? Is it to fulfill my higher needs or is it to ensure that my basic needs are covered? And my last tip on here is to spend where it makes financial sense, but never be frugal to the point where it costs you more money. So think about it like this. Would you prefer to buy something that's a little bit cheaper or something that's a little bit more expensive because of the cost? You want to ensure that you're looking at quality longevity. Is it worth it? Because if you buy something cheaper. It may break faster and then you keep spending it in the long run, it will cost you more. So if you're able to spend where it makes financial sense, is it serving you? What's the benefit? Then you're able to really save in the long run. You don't want to necessarily look just at today per say because today is only a part of the pie. What about tomorrow and next month? You know, the list goes on, but we have to keep into consideration things of that sort.

[00:04:41.910] - Carlee

Yeah, I love that. I'm like, OK, so I have a lot of things to say in response to your tips. And I'm trying to formulate my thoughts as we as we go into this. The first thing is, you know, just talking about this month's theme is getting our basic needs met, Maslow's hierarchy of needs. And I just want to circle back to safety needs. That's the theme of today's episode. And when I'm talking and when we're talking about safety needs, we're talking about personal security. So that that's one area here that that we're not talking about today. But I want to share also employment, resources, health and property, all of these things. I would say every single one of these things are influenced by money. So I love that you bring up that money can can be a source of pain and and it can hurt us, but it can also serve us in huge ways. And so. I love your example about, OK, well, we have to think about quality, right? We don't want to just go for the cheapest option because it might cost us more money down the line. And I laugh at this because I literally just I finally bought a new phone. And you can see we're on video here so she can see I have got a fancy new phone. And I was at the store and I was like, I am not buying that fifty dollar, 40 dollar case ain't happening. I'm not doing it. And yet I'm thinking, oh, my goodness, what if I drop this phone? Like that forty dollars purchase would give me so much more peace of mind and cost me less money in the long run. But so I laugh at that because it's definitely I'm going to go order a phone case right after this now. But it's it's true. It's totally true. Like if we buy this, this little crappy thing and it just keeps breaking, then we're at 20 bucks here. Twenty bucks there we're hundreds of dollars down the line when we could have just spent two hundred dollars or whatever. Up front.

[00:06:45.810] - Rose

I absolutely agree with that because, you know, in reality, that's the case for all of us and some of us, we say, oh, we can't afford it, but we end up spending more in the long run. And and for you, phone phones these days are so expensive. So you drop it and then it becomes more of an expense for you versus if you went out and got that fifty dollar case.

[00:07:07.290] - Carlee

Yeah, for sure. And I'm of course I'm convincing. I'm just going to get it off Amazon. It's going to be OK, but it's so, it's so interesting. And thinking about too, just another example that I think I read in like Jen Sincero, how to be a badass like a million years ago. But she talks about how, you know, like you're like, well, I don't have enough time to or money to pay this parking meter. And then then you get a ticket that's 40 times the expense of that, a few quarters that you could put in the parking meter. So now you have to have the money for it and now you have to have the time to go the whole way down. You handled the ticket if you want to dispute it, whatever you got, you said you didn't have the money or the time, but have you taken the time to put the coins in the slot? You have saved yourself so much of that. So I love that point. I think it's really relevant because we can really get into this almost like a lack mindset over the little things that end up costing us in the long run. Yeah. So, OK, we have a question for you. Rose and I were talking right before the show and you're like, OK, what do we what we want to know we want to know some more about you guys. So we have a question. We're really curious and we want to know in the comments section what your opinion on this is. So I'm going to let you take it away with your question

[00:08:23.520] - Rose

For sure. So for all of you out there and think about this, it's not a trick question, but it's a matter of assessing your needs, your thoughts and how you really go about things. So the question to you is, would you rather purchase a Louis Vuitton bag or say a fifty dollar bag from maybe Target or somewhere in the mall? But why would you choose that particular option, whichever one you choose?

[00:08:48.790] - Carlee

OK, so we're really curious. Now, I'm going to answer this because I just cannot resist and I'm going to say neither. I will not. Also, I don't I literally, right before the show, tried to write the word Louis Vuitton. And I was like, oh, that's the type of person I am. I literally don't know how to spell Louis Vuitton, but I personally love to buy my purses at thrift stores. Like I just bought my last purse at Circle Thrift. It looks fancy. It feels fancy. It's really great quality. It's not like one of those ones you've seen a million times in the thrift stores that are like they look like they're on the verge of death. Not me, but I love doing that like that search. So that's just personally me. I think I spent fifteen bucks on my last purse, but I'm so curious what everyone has to say in the comments. I'm just I'm dying inside. I can not wait. Now, if you are feeling overworked and exhausted, I've got some good news for you.
