How Daily Rituals and Routines Can Change Your Life

On the go? Listen to The Stress Less Show as a Podcast!

When was the last time you evaluated your daily routines? So many of us fall into mindless morning routines out of habit or necessity, but a well-crafted routine can actually do so much more for us than just get us out of bed. Our daily habits and routines have the potential to change our stress and time management game which is why I sat down with the founder of Finding Peace, Mie Potter, for this week’s episode of The Stress Less Show to talk all about the power of implementing intentional routines in our lives.

Mie has been improving lives before she even began her business! As a stay at home mom who loved sharing and learning new ways to approach personal growth, her transition into coaching was a natural progression of who she already was. Now, she has helped countless people connect to a greater sense of calm, peace, and recovery which she considers a major privilege.

I actually wake up every day thankful that I am living the life I’m living because I just love it.

Through her work as a coach and her own personal journey, Mie has seen firsthand how routines can impact lives in powerful ways and she has joined me to share her insights on why now more than ever implementing a routine can transform your state of mind.

Managing our fears of uncertainty

It is safe to say that 2020 is the year of uncertainty. With everything that is going on around us and each new day bringing more and more surprises and challenges, much of our stress can come simply from worrying about what is coming around the corner. While none of us can predict the future and eliminate the uncertainty in our lives, Mie does emphasize that there are ways we can lessen the amount of stress it brings us.

When we’re living in uncertainty and we have a 24/7 news cycle and it likes to be focused on the negative… it helps us to feel in control of something.
— Mie Potter

Finding a sense of control in the chaos is a big step in releasing the chronic stress that builds up in our minds and bodies. We may not be able to control everything we’d like to, one extremely important thing we have some control over is how we structure our day. This is where creating a unique ritual or routine can make a huge difference in the way we approach our lives. By creating rituals that include positive and constructive activities, we are able to move through our day with a greater sense of ease and show up more efficiently and effectively to every task or responsibility on our plate.

That’s actually all part of what some people think of as that dirty phrase, time management… having rituals that nurture yourself and help you feel prepared and process your day.

Grounding ourselves in intentional daily routines

Creating a morning or evening ritual not only helps us find a sense of control, but it also can help us feel more grounded in ourselves amidst the chaos of life. Scheduling in activities like journaling, meditating, eating mindfully, or reading an engaging book at the beginning or end of each day gives us a calm and centered space we know we can return to - even when unexpected things happen.

If we carefully manage what our schedule looks like, when the schedule goes all haywire we at least know that it’s haywire temporarily and we can correct and come back to what is on the schedule.
— Mie Potter

By creating a realistic schedule that works for us and includes restorative rituals to start and end the day, we allow ourselves to feel more empowered to handle the challenges that arise. There is always going to be stress and uncertainty in our lives, but even a short healing ritual to kickstart and cap off each day will help you weather whatever storms head your way.
